A heartfelt message to my brother David, on June 16th, what would have been your 21st Birthday...from your loving Sister Michelle
Dear David,
Happy Birthday! 21 and you are finally able to do pretty much anything you want. I know you've been waiting for this day forever. It seemed like it would never come. Finally...it comes and your not around to celebrate it with your Friends and Family, but I guess you are still lucky enough to celebrate 21 years of your life, with the one that made it all happen...the one who created Earth...God.
I can't wait to all be a Family again. I can't wait to hug you and kiss you and laugh with you again. Until then, I'm here on Earth, trying to make the best for myself.
I know you want me to be happy, but until I see you again, that won't be possible. I love you so much...Happy Birthday!
Love...Your one and only Sister,
Michelle
XOXOX

The Benzie County Sport Fishing Board of Directors accepts a check for $2500.00 from the David W. Harrison Memorial Fund.
Benzie County Sport Fishing Association Project Fund Established (now the Grand Traverse Area Sport Fishing Association)
Don and Karen Harrison and the David W. Harrison Memorial Fund have donated $2500.00 for the purpose of establishing a BCSFA Project Fund. The David Harrison Memorial Fund was setup in 2004 in the name of the Harrison Familys 20 year old son David, an avid Fisherman, who was killed in a mid-morning rollover accident in Honor, on November 6th,2003. “David, was a Freshman student at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. David was really an “Outdoors’ Kid” and loved Northwestern Michigan’s Lakes, Rivers, Forests and Fields. He loved Benzie County and he looked forward to building a life in this region” said David’s Mother, Karen Harrison.
The Harrison’s setup the Memorial Fund for the purpose of “assisting various Community Organizations in their efforts to enhance, promote and protect Fishing and other Outdoor related recreational resources in Northwestern Michigan”. “Future Memorial Fund monies will be utilized for these efforts in Benzie, Manistee and Wexford Counties” according to Don Harrison.
The Benzie County Sport Fishing Association (now the Grand Traverse Area Sport Fishing Association) is chartered to promote and protect the Sport Fishery of Lake Michigan, specifically in Benzie County and adjoining Waters. Their main objective is to enhance the Sport Fishery, but the goal of the Association is to improve, promote and protect Sport Fishing opportunities in Benzie County, while educating Fishermen and the public at large, on Fishing related resources and issues that arise within the County, and which affect the residents of or visitors to Benzie County.
Don Harrison stated that “In support of these goals, my Wife Karen and I have setup, in David’s Name, this “Project Grant” for $2500.00, to be used as start up Capital, for future BCSFA Projects. We feel David would have been thrilled with this idea. These funds, future matching funds and other project earmarked donations will be utilized to enhance and protect our wonderful Benzie County Fisheries resource and the future of Fishing in Benzie County.”
Prior to setting up this Grant, the Harrison’s assisted in funding The Benzie Audubon Club with Project Funding. The David W. Harrison Betsie Valley Lookout, completed in early 2004, was dedicated on June 16th 2004. The Lookout, an Observation Platform looking out over Betsie Bay, The Betsie River and the Betsie Valley Marsh is located along the Betsie Valley Trail, just south of the “Old Railroad Bridge”, between Frankfort and Elberta.
Should you be interested in becoming a Member of the GTASFA, Individual or Business Membership levels are available by contacting the Grand Traverse Area Sport Fishing Association at 586-201-4600 or by visiting their new web site at http://www.gtasfa.com/. A Special Poem...Love and Special Friendships...
A Dear Friend of mine recently shared this Special Poem with me, thinking that I may relate to it because of the recent Death of my son David and our connection to Nature and the Outdoors.
She, as usual, she was correct. I was touched by her thoughtfulness and sensitivity.
Thank you Ginny Richey!
In David's memory, I wish to share this Edgar A. Guest Poem with you now. Love you David...DAD
<><><><><><><><><><><><>
A Boy and His Dad
by Edgar A. Guest
A boy and his dad on a fishing trip…
There is a glorious fellowship!
Father and son and the open sky,
And the white clouds lazily drifting by,
And the laughing stream as it runs along
With the clicking reel like a martial song,
And the father teaching the youngster gay
How to land a fish in the sportsman's way.
I fancy I hear them talking there…
In an open boat, and speech is fair;
And the boy is learning the ways of men
From the finest man in his youthful ken.
Kings, to youngster, cannot compare
With the gentle father who's with him there.
And the greatest mind of the human race
Not for one minute could take his place.
Which is happier, man or boy?
The soul of the father is steeped in joy,
For he's finding out, to his heart's delight,
That his son is fit for the future fight.
He is learning the glorious depths of him.
And the thoughts he thinks and his every whim,
And he shall discover, when night comes on,
How close he has grown to his little son.
Oh, I envy them, as I see them there…
Under the sky in the open air,
For out of the old, old long-ago
Come the summer days that I used to know,
When I learned life's truth from my father's lips
As I shared the joy of his fishing trips-
A boy and his dad on a fishing trip-
Builders of life's companionship!
From the Book "Rhymes of Childhood'" 1924
DWH Note: On March 2, 1952, Edgar A. Guest was made Michigan’s Poet Laureate, the first and only person ever to be given that title. Also, I grew up a couple of blocks from where his daughter, the Sobel Family, made their home.
She, as usual, she was correct. I was touched by her thoughtfulness and sensitivity.
Thank you Ginny Richey!

Reprint of a Memorial Dedication Speech and the loss of our son, David Harrison...
I have been asked to post the Benzie Audubon Club, David W. Harrison Betsie Valley Lookout Dedication Speech that I gave on 6-16-04. Please see the following
DON...Love you David!...
Copy Formatted as a Speech
(Style Note: ... = equals pause or emphasis)
Author/Speaker: Don Harrison
Begin Speech...Thank you Carl…
Hello, I am Don Harrison. This is my wife Karen and Daughter Michelle. Today we have with us David’s Grand Parents…Aunt’s, Uncles, Cousins and some Dear Family Friends. We Thank them…and all of you…for attending today’s special event.
We are here today to Officially Dedicate this wonderful Observation Platform…as The Benzie Audubon Club…David W. Harrison Betsie Valley Lookout…
David Harrison, our son…was tragically killed in a freak mid-morning rollover accident, in Honor, on November 6th of last year. He was 19…
As we celebrate today…in his name…the Dedication of this wonderful Observation Platform…our Family is also is observing David’s Birthday. David would have been 20 years old today…
I would like to Thank Carl Freeman, Keith Westphal, Jim Honchell, Jerry Heiman and all of the other Board Members and Benzie Audubon Club Members for allowing us to help…in their construction of this worthy project. It is a fine addition to both Benzie County and the Betsie Valley Trail and it will be used by countless numbers of Benzie County Residents and Visitors alike.
I have been asked by the Audubon Club Board to tell all of you something of David…
It is fitting that this structure is named after our David. David would have been thrilled with this idea. A platform…built along the Betsie River…overlooking the Marsh and the Bay…next to one of David’s favorite local Fishing spot’s, at the old Railroad Bridge.
While David had numerous interests…much the types of things that you would expect a 19 year old to be interested in…what he wanted most was…a change. David wanted to get out of SE Michigan, to move to this beautiful part of our State…and to start a life for himself…UpNorth...
Last Fall, David moved to Traverse City. He had just started College at Northwestern Michigan, as a Freshman Student, living in the Northwestern Dorms. David was making new friends; he had a new part time Job lined up, he recently had purchased an older Chevy SUV and life was looking pretty good to him. For all of these good things, the move to Traverse City was actually, truly centered around his desire to be close to the thing he loved most about the area…Northwestern Michigan’s Lakes, Rivers, Forests and Fields. In fact, the day David was killed…we believe he was on his way back to school, after Fishing for Steelhead and late season Coho Salmon, on the Platte River, below the Lower Weir…a favorite spot for us both...
David was always an “Outdoors Kid”. Beginning back when he was 4 years old…we began our Family Nature Hikes and our Father Son Camping Trips. These trips were an opportunity to share the Outdoor experience with David. At this early age, we began his education by hunting for insects and of course…Frogs and Toads. David then found out about Woodland Newts and Salamanders and on our many trips, when in the woods…he left no log unturned…
Later…came our “Big Game” Hunts for a variety of Turtles and Snakes. The boy could not get enough of these types of outings. I cannot tell you how many butterfly nets and “pet containers” we went through in David’s first 15 years.
During all of these fun outings, I was trying my best to teach him about the Outdoors…and about Life. I spent a lot of time trying to nurture him in an appreciation and respect for the Outdoors. This was accomplished by taking Boat rides, long walks on the Beach, or walks along a River or Stream. We would take strolls in the Forest on existing trails or scout out new terrain while following a well-worn Deer Trail to points unknown. Additionally, the regular investigation of water filled Ditches; Ponds, Marshes, Creeks and Streams allowed me the opportunity to teach him about Natures diversity and wonder.
As David got older, he began to enjoy Fishing, and to a lesser degree,…hunting as well. Our many Fishing and Hunting trips allow for us to spend much time Outdoors together, and I have many, many cherished memories of those experiences.
What I really wanted to talk about today is the “Spiritually” side of loving the “Great Outdoors”. The “Spirituality” I am speaking of is actually something that you feel…and as a feeling, it is something,…which I have not yet found out how to fittingly put into words. I have given…“the words”…a lot of thought in the last several weeks. I have been at a loss as to how to explain to all of you what this “Spirituality” is and how this “Spirituality” tunes you in to the Outdoors…and how wonderful it makes you feel, once you have felt it…
One of my most favorite memories was when I began teaching David how to Stream Fish. For me, my “Mission” was to first teach him technique, presentation, reading the water and so on and then to slowly introduce the concept of looking for the “Spiritual” part of the outdoor experience… something that for me can be readily found at the Streamside…provided the conditions are right and you can allow yourself to feel it…
This “Spirituality” is impossible to teach because it is something that you cannot plan for…it is something that just comes to you, making itself known, in its own time and in its own way. The thing I did do for David was to talk to him about this and to help him to be sensitive to this experience…heightening his awareness related to the arrival of these feelings…feelings that provide a pure human yet otherworldly exhilarating whole-ness to Life, even if the feelings stay with you only for a fleeting moment…
While trying to articulate to you just what this feeling is and attempting to come to grips with a proper explanation of it, I called an Outdoor Writer and Author Friend, a Wildlife Artist and Author Acquaintance and a Wildlife Naturalist Author Friend of his for inspiration. These persons have much more Outdoor Life and Creative Writing Experience than my self and I wanted to see if they could assist me in my quest. While each of them had inspiriting personal thoughts and relevant anecdotes and offered their heartfelt help and support…what I have found is…that either no one has seemingly translated this feeling of mine yet…or that what I am trying to put into words is unique for each person…because this feeling is a completely personal thing, a relationship that you individually have with both the Outdoors and undoubtedly with a Higher Power…
You may recognize the feeling I am speaking of when you senses the Wind blow through the Trees or Tall Grasses...in just a certain way. An aromatic scent of a Flowering Tree or Scrub or the musty smell of the Earth after some Rain or a heavy Morning Dew…may put you in touch with that feeling as well. Lying back on a dark night, listening to the stillness of the world while looking upward at our UpNorth Heavens…may set these feeling off. It may strike you when you are standing in the Stream and realize that the current, moving under a near by downed Cedar or rolling melodically over something submerged is making something akin to Music…whose tune you cannot name…but surly do recognize...
In my teachings to David about all of God’s Creatures and the Outdoors…I spent much of my time passing along what I call the “Science” of the Outdoors. The thing that I like to think of when I think of David and I in Outdoors was that I believe was able to pass on some of the knowledge of the Spirituality of the Outdoors. I think David got it. I know David got it.
We brought with us some Photo’s of David, so that you might get a sense of whom this “Child of the Outdoors” was. These Photo’s are on the Pinup Boards located near the Dedication Banner and…we would be pleased if you would take a look at them before you leave.
Several years ago, my Wife Karen, David and Michelle put together a Memory Book for me, for Fathers Day. Each one created several pages and it was a wonderful present from them all.
Part of David’s contribution to his pages was a Poem that he wrote to me, which I will now read:
You taught me how to shoot a gun…
You taught me how to aim…
You taught me how to tie a hook…
And where to find…wild game…
You showed me all…the great fishing spots…
That I would never find…
You showed me where the Fish swim…
And where to throw the line…
You showed me where the snakes…slither in the grass…and where Turtles lay in the sun…
You put a net into my hand…
Sat back and watched me run…
I have spent my whole life outdoors with you…
And that to me is fun…
You gave me a gift I will keep forever…
Thank you Dad…I Love You…
While I have spoken mainly of “my” Outdoor David, due to the nature of the Dedication…it should be noted that David is actually our David. The fond loving memories of David live on in David’s Mother, Sister and all others who knew him. He is missed by all…
In closing, Thank you again for your attending and your support of both the Benzie Audubon Club and the Harrison Family.

Don Harrison's...Thoughts about Michigan UpNorth Memories
There is a lot of talk about where "UpNorth" actually is…
It is the place everyone wants to go to escape the pressures
and frantic pace of Life…
But where is "UpNorth" actually?
The Answer: For the most part, is not so much a location as it is
a "State of Mind"...
So how do you know when you've arrived "UpNorth"?
When you feel the cares of the world begin to slip away; When you
begin to breathe a little easier because the air seems purer; When
you notice the sky is bluer, and the pines are greener or taller, the
stars are brighter and people seem to smile a lot more!
Geographically vs. Metaphysically speaking...
you’re probably somewhere North of Clare, Michigan.
But regardless of where you think you are, you
finally have arrived "UpNorth"!
Sure is pretty up here!!!
